Take a summer break with the arts

Most of us are getting used to the idea of taking care of our lawns, watering our gardens and taking care of our flowers this summer. What is your favorite flower? We all have our favorite and one of mine is a perennial known as lilac plants or bushes. It’s my favorite because I associate the look and smell to my grandparents’ farms in Iowa.

Thank you to all who came out to the Ryan Crotty reception. It was a great time meeting Ryan and his family as they were on hand for any questions and thoughts from the artist. Don’t forget his art is on display for the entire month of June.

When you think of summer time what comes to your mind? Grilling out with friends, boat rides, camping, family reunions, Fourth of July celebrations and don’t forget a family vacation. I grew up in a family that took vacations in January because between farming and owning a drive-in restaurant my parents were busy during the summer.

One year we took a trip in January to Corpus Christi, Texas, in a pickup camper. Yes, it was cold in the back of the camper until we reached Oklahoma. We had a great time in the 50- to 70-degree weather and some people thought we were nuts for swimming when it was only 65 for a high. As you know kids will be kids and we made the most of it.

Maybe some of you find your family is in the same boat and have a busy summer. We have a very special event this week that is called the Artful Home Tour. It’s a fun evening walking from home to home sampling wonderful South American chocolate, tasting wine, looking at original artwork and listening to music. If you want to take a little break from the hustle and bustle of summer please come and join us.

The Artful Home Tour is Thursday, so not much time left to buy a ticket. We are selling tickets from the following board members; Linda Wheatley, Karen Melcher, Sue McClure, Joslyn Barcel Tate, Nancy Shadle and Daryl Smith, and at the art gallery, which is open 1-5 p.m. weekdays in the lower level of Columbus Public Library.

Tickets are $25 from board members and at the gallery, or $27 online at DiscoverTheArts.org. The homes we have this year are the following: Schumachers at 97 South Parkway, Williamses at 101 South Parkway, Machs at 113 South Parkway, Sands at 301 Morton Road and Hottovys at 303 Morton Road. These older stately, homes are great to see and tour.

At the arts council we are busy helping children with art lessons at art camp running the entire month of June. Art camp features Mrs. Graybil teaching drawing, printmaking, clay, pastels and painting. We are also helping out by volunteering our time at Columbus Public Schools Sizzling Summer School giving an art lesson each week to the kindergartners through second-graders. Living and breathing the arts is what we are all about.

Coming up we have Missoula Theatre in July. The Missoula Children’s Theatre International Tour Project will make stars of kids in grades 1-12. The weeklong theater residency provides an opportunity for kids to perform in an original musical comedy complete with costumes, sets, choreography and lyrics that empower children.

A team of tour actor/directors develop and produce a full-scale musical with 50-60 local children as cast members, directors and technical crew. There are roles especially suited for all ages, skill and experience levels. No advance preparation is necessary, just come and enjoy the fun.

Auditions, rehearsals, workshops and finished performances for the public are all part of the residency. A participation fee of $45 for those cast in the production covers the entire week’s residency, theater workshops and two adult tickets for the public performances.

Youth wishing to audition must arrive by 10 a.m. Monday, July 17, and plan to stay for the entire two-hour audition. Auditions and rehearsals will be held at the Federated Church gymnasium, 2704 15th St., in Columbus, and performances will be held at Central Community College’s Fine Arts Theater.

When you find your schedule is hectic this summer and you are hot from the summer breeze, stop down at Columbus Art Gallery. Cool down as you enjoy the art exhibits. You can also go to our website at DiscoverTheArts.com and find out what is going on or visit us on Facebook and like our page.
